This standard specifies the requirements and test methods for electroless nickel-boron alloy plating1) applied to metal substrates. a) Class 1 Electroless nickel-boron plating with a boron content of 0.1% to 3.5% is used for electronic components. It is mainly used in and has bonding and solderability. No heat treatment is applied to maintain solderability.b) Category 2 Electroless nickel-boron plating with a boron content of 3.5% to 6.0% is mainly used to provide surface hardness and wear resistance to iron and titanium parts. . Products plated in category 2 are amorphous with a Knoop hardness of 700 HK100, but when heat treated above 300°C, they become crystalline with a Knoop hardness of 1,000 HK100 or more.
