Scope
This standard sets out requirements for the structure and performance of magnetic compasses, binnacles and azimuth reading devices for navigation and steering of ships. Depending on the design of the ship, two types of binnacles are specified. The standard applies to liquid-filled magnetic compasses:  ——For the navigation and navigation of ships in accordance with current regulations. - Having a direct reading system. - Reflecting, projecting or transmitting. ).In the context of this standard, a magnetic compass is an instrument consisting of a directional system in a ball filled with liquid, supported by a single central axis and by gimbals into or out of the ball. Compasses without gimbals are also covered by this standard and the requirements relating to gimbals do not apply to such compasses. This standard applies to:  ——All ships subject to SOLAS (150 gross tons) fitted with a class A magnetic compass. or more, and ships engaged in international voyages, and ships not engaged in international voyages of a gross tonnage of 150 tons or more)—all ships not subject to SOLAS equipped with class A or class B magnetic compasses—ships equipped with class B magnetic compasses For lifeboats and rescue boats (as specified in Annex H) this standard does not apply to:a) dry card compassesb) compasses as described above.
