Scope
This standard specifies a method for measuring the aerobic biodegradability and disintegration of plastic, an organic compound, by measuring the amount of carbon dioxide generated under composting conditions. This method was designed to simulate aerobic composting of organic components of municipal solid waste. The test material is exposed to an inoculum originating from compost, and composting takes place under conditions where temperature, entrained air, and humidity are controlled. The test method is designed to measure the rate and rate at which carbon in the test material is converted to carbon dioxide. A separate test method shown in 8.6 and 8.7 is to use a specific inoculum obtained from compost without the use of fertilizer and use inorganic substances (vermiculite). It is designed to measure the speed and conversion rate of carbon in the test material being converted to carbon dioxide. The conditions described in this standard do not always correspond to the optimal conditions for obtaining maximum biodegradability.
