This part of IEC 61290-3 applies to all commercially available single-channel optical amplifiers (AOs), including AOs using optically pumped fibers (OFA) based on either rare earth doped fibers or Raman effect, semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) and planar waveguide optical amplifiers (POWA). It applies more particularly to single-channel AOs placed in front of optical receivers, when there is no optical band-pass filtering element placed between the AO and the receiver.
