This International Standard contains the generic names used to designate the various genera of man-made fibers based on a main polymer that are continuously produced on an industrial scale for textiles and similar purposes, together with the distinguishing features that characterize them. The term "manmade fibers", also referred to as synthetic fibers, is used for those fibers that are manufactured industrially, as opposed to fiber materials that occur naturally in fiber form. This International Standard contains recommendations for the rules for creating generic names (Appendix A). NOTE These rules were introduced in the sixth edition of this International Standard and therefore could not be applied to the existing generic names of the previous editions. The appendices contain the description of the fiber structures of chemical fibers made from different components (Appendix B) and the description of modified fibers (Appendix C).
