This standard specifies the method for detecting and counting heterotrophic bacteria and fungi in liquid fuels with a kinematic vis osity not greater than 24 mm/s under normal temperature conditions using membrane filtration. This standard applies to liquid fuels. This standard can be performed in the field or in the laboratory. The ability of individual microorganis s to form colonies on a specific culture medium depends on the taxonomic and ecological status of the enumerated species, the chemical properties of the culture medium, and the culture conditions. Therefore, test results should not be interpreted as absolute values but should be used as part of diagnostics and environmental monitoring along with other parameters in accordance with ASTM D6469. This standard provides multiple options for transferring microorganis s in fuel samples to the membrane, such as filtration method, filtration volume, dilution filtration, culture medium used for microorganis s, and culture temperature. The flexibility of the test simplifies the diagnostic process. When this method is used for condition testing, the same procedure should always be chosen.
