Scope

WARNING: Wastewater, activated sludge, soil, and compost may contain potentially pathogenic bacteria and should therefore be disposed of with appropriate precautions. Special care must be taken when handling toxicity test compounds or compounds whose properties are unknown. This standard specifies a method for determining the ultimate aerobic biodegradability and disintegration degree of materials as organic compounds under controlled composting conditions by measuring the amount of carbon dioxide emitted. This method simulates typical aerobic composting conditions for the organic fraction of mixed municipal solid waste. The test materials were exposed to the inoculum produced by composting, and the composting was carried out under the environmental conditions that the temperature, oxygen concentration and humidity were strictly monitored and controlled. This method determines the percent conversion of carbon in the test material to liberated carbon dioxide. 8.6 and 8.7 specify a method for determining the percentage conversion of carbon to released carbon dioxide in the test material using a solid bed of minerals instead of decomposed compost as an inoculum enriched with thermophilic bacteria (obtained from the compost by a special treatment route). The conditions described in this standard do not always correspond to the optimum conditions at which maximum biodegradation occurs.
