During the sequence of a plant engineering project starting with the idea through to the design and detail engineerig, erection, operation and disassembly, there is a continuous flow of information about the basic processes in the shape of a continuous or stepwise decomposition or abstraction between a large number of specialist personnel with extremely varied backgrounds in training and experience. The process description accordingly must contain all information necessary for engineering and normal operation throughout the life cycle of the system in a clear and structured layout which is technically and cognitively complete, recoverable and in the latest revision, which can only be achieved by formalisation of the process description. Formalisation means the reduction of the following to a defined amout symbols, rules for permitted combinations of characters and operations with symbols according to the meaning of the charcacter.
