Assume that some individuals in the population have certain characteristics. p is the proportion of individuals with this property in the population. For example p could be the fraction of defectives in a batch. Randomly and independently select several individuals as samples from the population. This International Standard specifies methods for testing a given hypothesis about p on the basis of such samples.
