Scope
This standard specifies the rules for alphabetical ordering of multilingual terms and dictionary materials (terms, term components or words) expressed in the Latin alphabet. This standard has taken into account the character sets of various languages represented by the Latin alphabet in the existing terminology and dictionary data records, and also considers the character sets used when transcribing materials in other languages into the Latin alphabet according to international norms . The alphabetic character rules given in this standard are only applicable to occasions where multiple languages are used at the same time, and do not affect the alphabetical ordering of each language itself. The text of this standard specifies the method for alphabetically sorting character strings. Appendix A of this standard gives the rules for word-by-word sorting, and word-by-word sorting is currently widely used. Appendix B of this standard introduces two additional rules to assist in the ordering of dictionaries and terms. Appendix C of this standard introduces the ordering rules for chemical names. Appendix D of this standard lists the various characters of the Latin alphabet. Appendix E of this standard lists languages using the Latin alphabet. Appendix F of this standard gives some alphabetical order that deviates from this standard for languages using the Latin alphabet system. Appendix G of this standard provides a normative description of the text of this standard, and the rules comply with ISO/IEC 14651.
