Scope
This guidance technical document describes the basic method for securely sending and receiving Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) data (ie Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions, S/MIME). Based on the widely used Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME), the method provides multiple security services such as authentication, message integrity, non-repudiation, and confidentiality to various Internet message applications. Traditional mail user agents can add various encryption services to sent messages by using this method, and can effectively process encrypted services in received messages. This Guidance Technical Document also describes the enhanced security services of S/MIME. This guidance technical document is not limited to e-mail, it can also be used for any transmission mechanism for transmitting MIME data (such as hypertext transfer protocol, HTTP). This specification utilizes the object-oriented characteristics of MIME, enabling the exchange of secure messages in various transmission systems.
