Scope
The Modbus standard defines an application-layer messaging protocol on layer 7 of the OSI model, which provides client/server communication between devices connected to different types of buses or networks. It also standardizes the protocol on the serial link to exchange Modbus requests between one master and one or more slaves. The purpose of this section is to describe the Modbus protocol over a serial link. Intended use for system designers implementing the Modbus protocol for serial links in their products. This section will facilitate interoperability between devices using the Modbus protocol. This part is also a supplement to the "Modbus Protocol-Based Industrial Automation Network Specification Part 1: Modbus Application Protocol" standard, see Figure 1 for details. In Chapter 9, the different implementation levels of the "Modbus Serial Link" are defined. Class regulations are all requirements that must be complied with for a device to belong to a class.
