Scope
This standard specifies test methods to roughly understand the durability of insulating materials due to high-voltage, low-current arc discharge, especially damage caused near the surface of the material. Arc discharge causes localized thermal or chemical decomposition and erosion of the material, creating conductive paths in the surface layers of the material. Test conditions are set to become progressively more severe. That is, at the initial stage, the severity is varied by intermittent low current arcing and changing its frequency, and at the latter stage, by increasing the continuous arc current in stages. From a practical point of view, it is required that the test be simple and that the test time be short. Therefore, this test method is suitable only for the first selection of materials, such as when detecting changes in properties due to differences in material composition, testing for material quality control, etc. Previous experience with the use of this test method has shown that results with acceptable reproducibility have been obtained for thermoset resins. On the other hand, with regard to thermoplastic resins, multiple testing institutions have reported that large variations in data exceeding the allowable range occur, and it has been pointed out that applying this test method to thermoplastic resins should be avoided. . Notes 1. In order to reduce the variation in data for thermoplastic resins, various methods have been tried to control the load on the electrode and the depth at which the electrode sinks into the specimen. If there is no electrode control mechanism as described above, this test method will not give valid results for thermoplastic resins. 2. The corresponding international standards of this standard are shown below. Based on ISO/IEC Guide 21, the symbols representing the degree of change are IDT (matched), MOD (modified), and NEQ (not equivalent).
