Scope
This Standard covers the formation and applicationof reference designations for electrical and electronicsparts and equipment.The reference designations of this Standard areintended for uniquely identifying and locating discreteitems on diagrams and in a set; for correlating items ina set; graphic symbols on diagrams; and items in partslists, circuit descriptions, and instructions.This Standard includes three methods for forming andapplying reference designations.(a) the unit numbering method(b) the location numbering method(c) the location coding methodA complete reference designation may incorporatereference designations formed by the use of any of thesemethods at any level from basic parts to complete units.The unit numbering method has a long history ofsatisfactory use in all types of electrical and electronicsequipment. The location numbering method and locationcoding method have been developed to permit arapid physical location of items in large, complicatedequipment featuring multiple use of many identical orclosely similar items. These methods shall be applied insuch a way that duplicate complete reference designationsdo not occur in a piece of equipment or system.Device function designations for power switchgearand industrial control use are not covered by thisStandard.
