Scope
This Standard specifies the method of sulphur print for steel whose sulphur content is normally 0.100 % or under. In the case where the sulphur content is over 0.100 %, the test may be performed by diluting the etching solution. This Standard is also applicable to steel castings. NOTE 1 The International Standard corresponding to this Standard is as fol- lows. ISO 4968 : 1979 Steel- Macrographie examination by sulfur print (Baumann method) (MOD) In addition, symbols which denote the degree of correspondence in the contents between the relevant International Standard and JIS are IDT (identical), MOD (modified), and NEQ (not equivalent) according to ISO/IEC Guide 21. NOTE 2 The sulphur print is essentially a qualitative test. Because of this, it is not advisable to assess the sulphur content of a given steel merely on the basis of its sulphur print. NOTE 3 Care shall be taken for the following cases because the appearance of sulphur print may be altered. a) For the steel containing titanium, the sulphur print may sometimes be difficult to be appeared. b) When testing the face subjected to cold working, the appearance of sulphur print may be altered. c) Depending on the sensitivity of photographic paper, the appearance of sulphur print may be altered. NOTE 4 As the application of test and the assessment of result vary depending on the steel type, application and the like, they shall be specified ac- cording to product standards for detail or subjected to the agreement between the purchaser and the manufacturer.
