Scope: This standard specifies requirements for the preparation of multipurpose test pieces for injection molding or direct compression molding of molding compounds. Type A and Type B specimens are tensile specimens. After simple machining, other various test specimens can be obtained (see Appendix A). Due to their wide range of uses, this standard refers to these tensile specimens as multi-purpose specimens. The main advantage of the multipurpose test piece is that all the test methods mentioned in Appendix A can be done on the basis of comparable molded products. This provides consistency in test performance because all specimens are tested under the same conditions. In other words, it can be expected that the test results of a set of specimens will not be significantly changed by inadvertently changing the molding conditions. On the other hand, if desired, it is easy to assess the effect of molding conditions and/or specimens in different states on test performance. For quality control, multipurpose specimens can be a convenient source of difficult-to-prepare specimens and have the advantage of requiring only one mold. Since the performance of multi-purpose samples may be significantly different from the performance of other samples specified in the relevant test methods, the use of multi-purpose samples should be agreed upon by both interested parties.
