Nitriding is carried out with the aim of giving the material the following properties:
——very high surface hardness (which does not decay even after remaining at 500 °C);
——very high wear resistance (generally greater than that given by the carbonitrided state);
——minimal distortions from heat treatment;
——better fatigue resistance.
