Scope
This standard aims to provide the classification of welders who must carry out welding with the MIG1 process on sheets of any type of steel or nickel alloys and their combinations with a thickness of no less than 4 mm with solid wires (see note 2 ) of austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel, nickel or nickel alloys and to establish the procedures for carrying out and evaluating the relevant qualification tests. This classification is valid for the welding of constructions in which only sheets, profiles, etc. are used; However, it does not apply to the circumferential welding of pipes unless their diameter is sufficiently large such that the difficulties can be assimilated to those of sheet metal. Note 1 - The qualification, achieved according to this standard using pure argon or argon mixed with other gases whose percentage does not exceed 3% in total, is also valid for welds carried out with mixtures of substantially inert gases. If the manufacturer presents the welder for qualification with the use of a certain mixture with a percentage of other gases greater than 3% of the total, this standard can still be applied, but in this case the qualification is valid only for welding carried out with the mixture used (see 2.2). Note 2 - The qualification, obtained according to this standard, using solid wires (see 5.2) enables the welder to carry out welding only with such wires. If the manufacturer presents the welder for qualification using cored wire, this standard can still be applied, but in this case the qualification is valid only for soldering carried out with wires equal or similar to those used for the test (see 2.2). Passing these tests does not exclude that the welder must be expressly trained for particular jobs, nor does it exclude the possible carrying out, in such cases, of adequate tests.
