Scope
This standard describes three methods for determining the ash content applicable, with the limitations indicated in point 2, both to raw rubbers and to raw or vulcanized mixtures. The standard does not apply to the determination of ash in raw polychloroprene. The standard applies to the determination of ash in raw or vulcanized mixtures based on one or more of the elastomers listed below and in the corresponding raw rubbers. — Polyisoprene of both natural and synthetic origin — Butadiene-styrene copolymers — Butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers — Polybutadienes — Isobutylene-isoprene copolymers and corresponding halogenated copolymers — Ethylene-propylene copolymers and related terpolymers — Polychloroprenes (exclusively if in raw or vulcanized blends). When applying the standard, the following warnings must be kept in mind: a) Methods A and B must not be applied for the determination of ash in raw or vulcanized mixtures containing halogens or volatile inorganic compounds: in these cases method C must be applied ; b) Method C must not be applied to the dosage of ash in raw tires; c) Lithium compounds react with the silica of porcelain or quartz crucibles forming volatile products and therefore the ashes of rubber polymerized with lithium compounds and containing residues must be calcined in platinum crucibles or aluminum containers; d) The three methods do not necessarily give identical results, on the contrary it is very frequent that the results obtained differ significantly from each other.
