Scope
The method considered concerns the examination of metallic materials under an optical microscope using the replication technique carried out with paints or films. It is generally applied when it is not possible to take a sample from the product under examination from which to obtain a test tube for microscopic examination. In these conditions the method can be considered a non-destructive microscopic examination performed on the test consisting of the product. The method consists in making an impression on the surface under examination which reproduces in detail the micro-reliefs caused by the micrographic attack. In this standard, three systems are taken into consideration which respond equally well to the purpose in the various conditions of use. The surface to be examined can be covered with paints which give a thin, transparent, tension-free, easily dryable film; you can use metal plates with a layer of paint already applied to one surface (surface film); a plastic film (without support) in sheets can be adhered to the surface, previously moistened with a solvent. The method distinguishes the following phases: polishing and etching of the surface to be examined; application of replication; replica drying; replication detachment; fixing the replica on the slide (when necessary); examination of the reply. Appendix: list of standards relating to the attachment of test tubes for various metallic materials.
