It concerns the qualitative characteristics which the rubber gaskets intended to ensure the tightness of the circuits and cooling chambers of diesel engines for railway locomotives and railcars must satisfy, which are traversed by water generally mixed with an antifreeze and possibly also with an anti-corrosive based on mineral oil. Shape and dimensions: see UNI 5415-64, class 1. Types of gaskets: type a gaskets, for operating temperatures lower than 120 degrees cent.; type b gaskets, for operating temperatures between 120 and 200 degrees cent.. Designation and marking. Tests: visual examination and dimensional control; hardness test; tensile test; determination of residual deformation after 25% compression; determination of the change in volume due to the effect of treatment in oil.
