1.1.1 This Code deals with the design, installation and maintenance of artificial lighting systems in buildings.
1.2 Definitions
Adaptation
The process which takes place as the visual system adjusts itself to the brightness or the colour of the visual field. The term is also used, usually qualified, to denote the final state of this process. For example "dark adaptation" denotes the state of the visual system when it has become adapted to a very low luminance.

The SI unit of luminous intensity, equal to one lumen per steradian.

Colour rendering
The colour quality of a stimulus, usually defined by coordinates on a plane diagram in the CIE colourimetric system (CIE Publication 15) or by the combination of dominant wavelength and purity.
A plane diagram showing the effect of mixtures of colour stimuli, each chromaticity being represented unambiguously by a single point on the diagram.
A general expression for the appearance of colours when illuminated by light from a given source compared, consciously or unconsciously, with their appearance under light from some reference source.

Contrast
A measure of the degree to which the colours of surfaces illuminated by a given light source conform to those of the same surface under the reference illuminant, usually diffuse skylight.
The temperature of a full radiator which emits radiation of the same chromaticity as the radiator considered.
A term that is used subjectively and objectively. Subjectively it describes the difference in appearance of two parts of a visual field seen simultaneously or successively. The difference may be one of brightness or colour or both. Objectively, the term expresses the luminance difference between the two parts of the field by such relationship as contrast equals:

Quantitatively, the sign of the contrast is ignored.
A measure of the contrast of a task under a given lighting installation in comparison with its contrast under reference lighting conditions (as provided by an integrating sphere).
