Scope
This Functional Standard defines Communications between two end systems in a single or multiple LAN configuration. Specifically, - Provision of the OSI Connection-mode Transport Service as defined in ISO/DIS 8072 between an end system (the "reference end system") connected to a CSMA/CD LAN and an end system on the same or another CSMA/CD LAN, or any other end system accessible through the network service provider in the configuration of LANs. - Provision of the OSI Connectionless-mode Network Service as defined in ISO/DIS 8348/DAD1 between the reference end system and the corresponding end system according to ISO/DP 8880/1 and ISO/DP 8880/3. Global network layer addressing, as defined in ISO/DIS 8348/DAD2, is supported. A system that supports only the protocol set for layers 1-4 specified in this Functional Standard does not satisfy the conformance requirements for the transport layer defined in ISO/DIS 8073. This functional standard alone does not meet the conditions for a fully open system set out in the addendum to the reference model covering Connectionless-mode transmission, ISO 7498/DAD 1. This Functional Standard specifies a set of protocols, termed a profile, to provide the function defined above. It does not specify total system capability. In particular, a system may operate this profile and at the same time engage in other Communications ?ver the medium to which it is connected. The requirements placed on a system in this Functional Standard are soley those necessary for operation of the protocol set specified. Note 1 : Both Functional Standards ENV 41 101 and 41 102 can be applied to single LAN environments. Preference should be given to ENV 41 102 in such cases where extensibility of a configuration is to be envisaged. Note 2 : A system conforming to Functional Standard ENV 41 102 is not thereby precluded from operating according to Functional Standard ENV 41 101 when communicating with another system on the same LAN.
