Scope
The specifications of this standard apply to: — radioactive aerosol contamination meters; — radioactive aerosol contamination monitors; exclusive of warning assemblies and indicators. These specifications shall be applied in accordance with the general principles for sampling airborne radioactive materials of ISO Standard 2889. In consideration of the great difficulties and even, in some cases, the impossibility of determining the true intake of persons (workers and population) resulting from radioactive aerosol contamination, the assemblies must fulfil two main functions, which are: Actuation of a warning signal when either a predetermined high concentration or a predetermined time-integrated concentration of atmospheric radioactive contamination at a given location is exceeded (for monitors). For the purposes of this standard, contamination meters and monitors are assemblies equipped with filters for the retention of radioactive aerosols. Electrostatic precipitator and impactor assemblies will not be considered in this document. Contamination meters or monitors designed for selective monitoring (for instance, plutonium aerosol contamination) are not considered in this standard. They should be the subject of separate standards. This standard specifies, for the assemblies described above, general characteristics, general test procedures, radiation characteristics, electrical, mechanical, safety and environmental characteristics and also identification certificate. Supplementary requirements may be necessary for the assemblies carried on board land vehicles, aircraft, ships, etc.
