NZS 3621:1987 STANDARD NAMES OF COMMERCIAL TIMBERS IN NEW ZEALAND Part 1 ALPHABETICAL LIST OF BOTANICAL NAMES AND THEIR CORRESPONDING COMMON NAMES Part 2 ALPHABETICAL INDEX OF COMMON NAMES Part 3 NOTES ON GENERA
In this Part 1, which is the main section of the document, the
botanical names of some 349 species or groups of species of
timbers which are considered to be of interest or possible interest
commercially in New Zealand, are listed. The names are in
alphabetical sequence.
The preferred common name and other common names, together
with the country/ies they are indigenous to, are given alongside
each botanical name/s and the authors of such name/s.
The index number shown in the left-hand column facilitates
reference from Part 2, (Alphabetical Index of some Common
Names), to where those names are used in Part 1.
In the fifth column the letter "H" indicates hardwoods; or more
specifically, the timbers of the botanical group angiosperms, not
all of which are hard wood. The letter "S" indicates the softwoods,
or timbers of the botanical group gymnosperms, most of which
are conifers.
The appearance of an asterisk alongside the botanical name
indicates that it is of major commercial significance in New
Zealand.
