This standard applies to single-phase transformers with separate primary and secondary windings for connection to an alternating current supply with a voltage up to 500 V at 50 or 60 Hz, used for the supply and current limitation of tubular lamps with cold cathodes or assemblies of these lamps, intended for lighting, illuminated advertis ng, light signals and similar applications, where the transformers have a rated no-load voltage of more than 1000 V but not more than 10 000 V 1)*). The standard does not apply to transformers intended for the supply of lamps or tubes such as low or high pressure sodium lamps, high pressure mercury vapor lamps, halogen lamps, xenon lamps, warm cathode fluorescent lamps, special lamps for copy machines, etc. Independent and built-in transformers both fall within the scope of this norm. This standard specifies provis ons that transformers must meet with a view to safety. The guarantee for the operational safety of these transformers also includes a check on the proper functioning of transformers when supplying power chains with gas dis harge lamps. However, because there is no standardization of the properties of these lamps, this standard provides reference loads to obtain comparable test results. In areas where special conditions exis , such as in ships, vehicles and the like, and in hazardous areas, where there is a ris of explosion, for example, special constructions may be required. This standard does not apply to autotransformers whose application, if permitted, is subject to national installation regulations. Nevertheless, this standard may serve as a guideline for transformers for applications other than those specified in this chapter, e.g. transformers for photolamps, provided that their properties fall within the scope of this scope and they are not covered by other special standards.
