Scope
This Functional Standard defines communications between two end systems in single or multiple LAN configuration. More precis ly, - provis on of the OSI connection mode transport service as defined in is /Dis 8072 between an end system (the "reference end system") connected to a CSMA/ local network CD and an end system on the same or another CSMA/CD LAN, or any other end system accessible through the network service provider in the LAN configuration; ——provis on of the OSI connectionless network service as defined in is /Dis 8348/DAD 1 between the reference end system and the corresponding end system in accordance with is /DP 8880/1 and is /DP 8880/3. Global Network Layer addressing as defined in is /Dis 8348/DAD 2 is supported. A system that implements only the set of Layers 1 to 4 protocols specified in this Functional Standard does not meet the conformance requirements for the Transport Layer defined in is /Dis 8073. This Functional Standard alone does not meet the requirements. conditions required for an open system in the strict sense as defined in the addendum to the Reference Model covering communication in connectionless mode, is 7498/DAD 1 This Functional Standard specifies a set of protocols, called profile, making it possible to provide the function defined above. It does not specify all the possibilities of the system. In particular, a system can operate according to this profile and at the same time establis other communications via the medium to which it is connected. The requirements for a system in this Functional Standard are only those that are necessary for the operation of the specified protocol set. Note 1: Functional standards ENV 41 101 and ENV 41 102 are applicable to single local network environments. ENV 41 102 should be preferred in cases where a configuration extension needs to be considered. Note 2: It is therefore permitted for a system complying with Functional Standard ENV 41 102 to operate in accordance with Functional Standard ENV 41 101 when communicating with another system on the same local network.
