1.1 This standard ( Part 2 ) relates to varnish bonded glass-fibre covered rectangular copper conductors, the glass covering being a multiple lapping of glass fibre applied in alternate directions and bonded with a suitable thermosetting varnish. The wires covered by this specification are suitable for temperature index 130, 155, 180, and 200. The type of varnish shall be based on the temperature index of the wire required by the purchaser.
1.1.1 It does not apply to stranded or laminated conductors or to conductors covered with a layer of material other than bonded glass or to braided glass covering.
1.2 Sizes—The requirements of the standard are applicable to conductors having thicknesses from 0·80 mm up to 5·6 mm and widths from 2 mm up to and including 16 mm. A schedule of preferred sizes is given in IS : 6160-1971〓.
1.3 Grade of Covering — Three grades of coverings are specified as under:
a) Grade 1 — G1
b) Grade 2 — G2
c) Grade 3 — G3
Note — Covered conductors conforming to this standard are not necessarily suitable for severe edge-wise bending. Any special test requirements should be agreed between the purchaser and the supplier.
