1.1 This standard prescribes the method for the determination of the density, by means of a glass hydrometer, of crude petroleum and of petroleum products or mixtures of petroleum and non-petroleum products, normally handled as liquids, and having a Reid vapour pressure below 1.8 kgf/cm2. Values are measured on a hydrometer at convenient temper-atures, readings of density being reduced to 15°C by means of international standard tables. By means of the same tables, values for density can be converted to relative density at 15.6/15.6°C or API gravity at 15.6°C.
1.2 The hydrometer method is most suitable for determining the density of mobile, transparent liquids. It may also be used, when necessary, for more viscous oils by allowing sufficient time for the hydrometer to reach equilibrium, or for opaque oils by employing a suitable meniscus correction.
1.3 When used in connection with bulk oil measurements, volume correction errors are minimized by observing the hydrometer reading at a temperature close to that of the bulk oil temperature.
