Scope

1.1 This standard prescribes the method to evaluate the following qualities of HD type 1 crankcase oils of all the mono viscosity grades of IS : 496-1979* when used in four stroke compression ignition engines operated under endurance conditions: a) The ability of the lubricating oil to prevent excessive piston groove deposits which could lead to ring sticking; and b) The ability of the lubricating oil to prevent the formation of excessive deposits on the piston skirt and lands.
