Bl This standard establishes the method for determining the sulfated residue, lead, iron and copper in new and used lubricating oils. Other metallic elements, such as sulfur, chlorine and phosphorus, which are commonly found in fixed quantities in lubricating oils, do not interfere with this method. B-2 The sulfated residue is used as a measure of total metal content, but its use is not recommended in the determination of lead, iron and copper. B-3 When the sulfated residue is used as an indication of the concentration of additives that contain known quantities of metals in new oils, but do not contain lead, the use of the method indicated in the IRAM 6571 standard is recommended.
