Scope
1.1 This Standard is intended to establish a test method for determining the neutralization number (total acid number, strong acid number or strong basic number) as a measure of the acidic or basic constituents (Note 1} of petroleum derivatives (Note 2) and lubricating oils soluble or relatively soluble in mixtures of toluene and isopropanol 1.2 This method is applied to determine acids or bases whose dissociation constants in water are greater than 10-9; They do not interfere. Salts react if their hydrolysis constants are greater than 10~9. Note 1. Compounds that have acidic characteristics such as organic and inorganic acids, esters, phenolic compounds, and lactoses can be found in new or used lubricating oils. , resins, salts of heavy metals and additives such as inhibitors and detergents. In an analogous way, you can find compounds that have basic properties that can be organic and inorganic bases, amino compounds, salts of weak acids (soaps), basic salts of bases. polyacids, heavy metal salts and added agents such as inhibitors and detergents. Note 2. This method is not suitable for measuring basic compounds of some types of lubricating oil additives for which the potentiometric titration method must be used.
