This standard specifies a method for determining point estimates and confidence intervals for the median when the population has a continuous probability distribution, based on a random sample of sample size n taken from the population. This method is distribution independent. That is, this method does not require prior knowledge about the distribution family to which the population distribution belongs. Similar methods can also be used to estimate quartiles and percentile points.
