- This standard fully describes the Extensible Markup Language (XML). XML is a subset of SGML. The design purpose of XML is as follows: a) XML should be used directly on the Internet; b) XML should be widely used; C) XML should be compatible with SGML; d) it should be easy to write programs for processing XML files; The number of optional features should be reduced to a minimum, preferably none; f) XML documents should be readable and moderately clear; g) XML design should be possible quickly; h) XML design should be formal and concise ; i) XML documents should be easy to create; j) simplicity of XML markup is of minimum importance.
