The terms as defined in this document should be applied when carrying out and describing the standardized methods of susceptibility testing of pathogens to antimicrobial agents (see standard series of DIN 58940). The document aims at enabling a standardized application of the term and, consequently, in order to guarantee a uniform action by the microbiological laboratory when carrying out the tests as well as a standardized evaluation of the susceptibility of agents (also called pathogens in the following). It contributes to facilitating the communication between the medical practitioner and the microbiological laboratory which is generally entrusted with such special tests.
