Scope
This standard presents human-centered usability methods that can be used for design and evaluation, and elaborates on the advantages, disadvantages and other factors related to the application of each usability method when applied. This International Standard clarifies the impact of life cycle phases and the characteristics of individual projects on the choice of usability method, and provides examples of the application of usability methods in specific scenarios. Since the primary users of this standard are project managers, this standard addresses ergonomic issues at the technical level only in the depth necessary to allow managers to understand their relevance and importance in the design process as a whole. As a supplement to this standard, GB/T 18978 gives a fuller elaboration on these issues. The main users of GB/T 18978 are system developers, specification makers and system buyers. Nonetheless, all parties involved in the development of a human-centred system, including the system's end users, should receive appropriate guidance in this International Standard. The guidance in this standard can be tailored to each specific design situation by using a list of questions that characterize the context in which the delivered product will be used. The selection of an appropriate usability method should also take into account the corresponding lifecycle processes. This standard addresses only methods widely used by usability professionals and project managers. The details of how to implement or execute the stated usability methods are not explicitly stated in this standard. NOTE: Most methods require the involvement of an ergonomics expert. These methods may not be suitable for persons without appropriate skills and knowledge.
