This standard specifies the use of an acoustic tube, two microphone positions, and a digital frequency analysis system necessary to measure the normal incidence sound absorption coefficient of sound-absorbing materials. This standard is also applicable to the measurement of the specific acoustic impedance or specific acoustic admittance of the surface of sound absorbing materials. Since the specific acoustic impedance of a sound-absorbing material is related to its physical properties (e.g. flow resistance, void modulus, elasticity and bulk density), measurements according to this standard are suitable for basic research and product development.
