This standard specifies requirements for the preparation of multi-purpose specimens for injection molding of molding compounds or direct compression molding. Type A and Type B specimens are tensile specimens. After simple machining, other various test specimens can be obtained (see Appendix A). Because of their wide range of uses, this standard refers to these tensile specimens as multipurpose specimens. The main advantage of multipurpose specimens is that all test methods mentioned in the appendix can be performed on comparable molded articles. In this way, test performance is consistent because all specimens are tested under the same conditions. In other words, it can be expected that the test results for a set of specimens will not change significantly due to inadvertent changes in molding conditions. On the other hand, if desired, it is easy to evaluate the effect of molding conditions and/or specimens in different states on test performance. For quality control, multipurpose specimens can serve as a convenient source of difficult-to-prepare specimens and have the advantage of requiring only one mold. Since the performance of multi-purpose specimens may be significantly different from the properties of other specimens specified in the relevant test methods, the use of multi-purpose specimens should be subject to the consent of both interested parties. Note: The main revision of this standard to the previous version is to reduce the allowable error of the shoulder radius of type A and type B specimens. Taking into account the fact that many molds based on previous versions of the standard are still in use, the revisions are only recommended and will be enforced in the next revision. A gradual transition to standard molds is allowed within ten years, see Appendix B.
