Scope
1.1.1 This standard applies to the design and construction of large steel welded low-pressure above-ground storage tanks with a single vertical axis of rotation for storing petroleum intermediate products (gas or vapor), finished products and other similar liquids. 1.1.2 This standard applies to storage tanks with a design pressure (gauge pressure) less than 0.1MPa (15lb/in) and a metal temperature not higher than 121°C (250°F). 1.1.3 The basic provisions of this standard apply to tank construction areas where the lowest daily average ambient temperature is -45°C (-50°F) or above. The low-pressure stainless steel storage tanks in Appendix S are not limited by ambient temperature. Appendix R applies to low-pressure storage tanks for refrigerated products with metal temperatures ranging from -51°C to 4.5°C (-60°F to +40°F). Appendix Q applies to low-pressure storage tanks for liquefied hydrocarbon gases whose metal temperature is not less than -168°C (-270°F). 1.1.4 The provisions of this standard may be applied to: a) Liquid storage tanks containing or storing liquids with a gas phase space above the liquid level. b) Storage tanks that individually contain or store gas or vapor, but do not apply to suspended gas tanks. 1.1.5 The provisions in this standard do not include horizontal tanks, but appropriate parts of them can be used and based on engineering practice to design and construct horizontal tanks. For details of horizontal tanks not included, their safety shall be the same as that of the design and construction details provided in this standard.
