Scope
This standard specifies a method for measuring the sound power level of a noise source by measuring the normal component of the sound intensity on a measuring surface that completely surrounds the noise source being measured. The area integral of the sound intensity component perpendicular to the measuring surface is approximated by scanning the sound intensity probe along a continuous path covering the area of the local measuring surface which is divided into several adjacent areas. The measuring instrument measures the average normal sound intensity component and the mean square sound pressure during each scan. The scanning operation can be realized by manual or mechanical means. Weighted sound power levels for octave bands or limited frequency bands are calculated using measured 1/3 octave band values. The method can be used for any sound source with a defined stable measurement surface on which the sound produced by the source under test and other apparent external sources is stable in time. The range of the noise source to be measured is defined by the selection of the measurement surface. This method can be used in a specified test environment that meets all relevant requirements of this standard. Appendix C of this part describes the auxiliary tests to be carried out together with the sound power measurement, the results of which are used to evaluate the quality and accuracy level of the sound power measurement. If the quality of the measurement cannot meet the requirements specified in this part, the measurement process shall be corrected according to the specified method. This section does not apply to any frequency band where the sound power of the measured sound source is negative. This section can be used for noise sources in any of the following environments: Changes over time will not cause unacceptable degradation of sound intensity measurement accuracy; sound intensity measurement probes will not encounter unacceptably high velocities or unstable airflow conditions (See 5.2.2, 5.3 and 5.4). In some cases, the measurement conditions are too harsh to meet the requirements of this standard. For example: the external noise level may exceed the dynamic performance range of the instrument or may change too much during the test. At this time, the method given in this section is not suitable for measuring the sound power level of the noise source.
