Scope
This standard specifies the requirements necessary to minimize the fire hazard of reciprocating internal combustion engines arising from the engine, its components and auxiliary equipment. If necessary, special requirements can also be put forward for the specific purpose of the engine. The requirements of this standard are not intended to enable the engine to continue running during or after a fire. This standard applies to land, railway traction and marine reciprocating internal combustion engines, but does not include driving agricultural tractors, road vehicles, road construction machinery and earth moving machinery and aviation engines. This standard may also apply to reciprocating internal combustion engines used to drive industrial trucks and small marine engines, and for other purposes for which no appropriate fire protection standards exist. This standard can be used as the basis for standards for engine applications other than those described above.
