Scope
—This International Standard provides principles applicable to the development of sampling plans, sampling techniques and handling of water samples from rivers for physical, chemical and microbiological evaluation. This does not apply to sampling in estuaries and coasts, and has limitations in its application to sampling in canals and other inland ice where flow regimes are limited. —Sediment and biological tests require special procedures and are not the subject of this standard. Where natural or man-made dams result in water retention for more than a few days, the area of the river may be considered a standing water body for sampling purposes. JIS K 0410-3-4 (ISO 5667-4) provides guidelines for sampling in this case. - Determining the sampling purpose is an important precondition for identifying the principles that should be applied to a particular sampling problem.
