This standard specifies standard operating procedures and requirements for the inspection and classification of localized overheating of grinding surfaces by chemical etching. This standard applies to steel parts such as gears, shafts, splines and bearings. This standard does not apply to nitrided parts and stainless steel parts. The chemical etch method is more sensitive to changes in surface hardness than most hardness testing methods. Surface temper etch inspection shall be performed after surface grinding and before further finishing operations.
