This standard specifies the nomenclature system for polyethylene thermoplastic materials and can also be used as the basis for classification. The characteristic properties of polyethylene are density and melt mass flow rate. Different types of polyethylene are distinguished by a classification system based on the values of their characteristic properties and recommended uses and/or processing methods, important properties, additives, colorants, fillers and reinforcing materials. This standard applies to polyethylene homopolymers and other copolymers whose 1-olefin monomer content is less than 50% (m/m) and non-olefin monomers with functional groups are not more than 3% (m/m). This standard applies to materials that are conventionally in the form of powder, granules or crushed particles, unmodified or modified by colorants, additives, fillers, etc. This standard does not apply to masterbatches and EPM rubber. This standard does not imply that materials with the same name will necessarily have the same properties. This standard does not provide engineering data, performance data, or processing condition data necessary to describe a particular use and/or processing method for a material. If necessary, these additional properties can be determined according to the test methods specified in the relevant standards. Additional requirements may be given in character group 5 in order to specify a particular use of a thermoplastic material or to ensure reproducibility of processing.
