Scope
This standard specifies requirements for audiometers or related parts. With this design, speech sounds can be presented to subjects in a standardized manner, for example for speech recognition tests. Hearing plans are divided into four types: Class A can provide a wide range of functions, Class B only provides basic functions, and Class A and B audiometers that use free-field equivalent output levels to calibrate headphones are designated as Classes AE and BE, respectively. This standard does not include requirements for speech audiometers that provide frequency response adjustment. This adjustment is intended to determine the optimum intelligibility frequency response curve for each subject. It is the intent of this standard that, when using a different audiometer conforming to this standard, a hearing test for a given subject using speech as the test stimulus should give substantially the same results for a given calibration method, and for earphones and bones. Output levels produced by vibrators, their specifications, calibration and testing methods are given: Free-field equivalent output level method for class AE and BE audiometers. Uncorrected coupler output stage method for class A and class B audiometers. Note: The results are also related to the test material, test room, loudspeaker and other factors other than the audiometer.
