Scope
In order to enable compatible interconnection of all stations of a local area network using the token-passing bus access method, this standard: 1) specifies the electrical characteristics and/or optical and physical characteristics of the transmission medium; 2) specifies the electrical or Optical signaling method; 3) specifies the format of the sending frame; 4) specifies the actions taken by the station when receiving the frame; 5) specifies the logical link control (LLC) at the medium access control (MAC) sublayer and above ) The services provided at the conceptual interface between sublayers; 6) The actions, entities and values used to manage the MAC sublayer and physical layer entities (PLE) are specified. Within the scope of this standard, the operation of a station is specified by the hierarchical model shown in Figure 1-1 and described in GB9387. Additional information on the LAN802 family of standards can be found in the IEEE 802.1A standard. Figure 1-1 also shows which clauses of this standard specify the interfaces between layers and which clauses specify the operation of the layers themselves. Recommendations for frequency allocations for Common Antenna Television (CATV) systems are specified by other standards and are outside the scope of this standard.
