- This International Standard specifies an interchange format for transferring files or parts of files containing data records between computer systems. This interchange format does not prescribe a record format for any particular system's native file, but may be used for this purpose. This International Standard defines a general structure that can be used to transfer files or records of various data types and structures between systems. This International Standard specifies the means to describe the content of data records, but not its application semantics, although application semantics may be included in the transport part. This interchange format can also be used to transfer individual records, individual data fields or individual subfields and their descriptions. This standard specifies: --Medium-independent file and data record descriptions for information exchange; --Descriptions of data elements, vectors, arrays, and levels including character strings, bit strings, and numerical forms; --Descriptions by data descriptions A data description file composed of accompanying data records, which enables information exchange to occur with a minimum specific external description; --Data description records, which describe the characteristics of each data field in the accompanying data records; --Complicated file and record structures Three levels of degree; --FTAM unstructured and structured file types.
