This standard specifies the general requirements for the operation of the accreditation system for calibration and/or inspection laboratories, so that the accreditation granted and the services included in the accreditation can be recognized nationally or internationally, and also to enable the organization operating the accreditation system to Internationally recognized as competent and trustworthy. Users of accreditation body services, other than laboratories accredited by the accreditation body, may require the accreditation body to comply with supplementary requirements other than those specified in this standard. The purpose of this International Standard is to provide guidance for the establishment and operation of accreditation bodies and to facilitate agreements between such bodies for the mutual recognition of laboratory accreditation. Note: For the purpose of eliminating barriers to transnational trade, the agreement on mutual recognition and accreditation reached between accreditation institutions may also include other content not clearly specified in this standard, such as competency comparison inspection or comparison between laboratories, personnel exchange or training programs. In order to build trust and harmonize the understanding and implementation of standards, each accreditation body should encourage technical cooperation and exchange of experience between accredited laboratories and prepare for the exchange of information with other accreditation bodies on accreditation procedures and practices.
