Scope
This standard covers general@ dimensional@ and performance specification for several varieties of hose intended for general application in hydraulic systems on construction and industrial equipment and commercial products. These general specifications are common the and shall supplement the detailed specification for the SAE 100R1@ SAE 100R2@ SAE 100R3@ SAE 100R4@ SAE 100R5@ SAE 100R6@ SAE 100R7@ SAE 100R8@ SAE 100R9@ SAE 100R10@ SAE 100R11@ and SAE 100R12 hydraulic hoses set forth in the following section. Hose Application ?C Hydraulic hose has a finite life and factors which will reduce hose life are: (1) Flexing the hose to less than the specified minimum bend redius. (2) Twisting@ pulling@ crushing@ or abrading the hose. (3) Operating above or below the hose operating temperature range. (4) Exposing the hose to surge pressures above the maximum operating pressure. Surge@ a rapid and transient rise in pressure@ will not be indicated on many common pressure gages and can best be measured on electronic measuring instruments with a high-frequency response. Surge pressures higher than the maximum operating pressure will shorten hose life and should be taken into account by the hydraulic designer. Size Designations ?C Hose sizes are normally designated by the nominal hose inside diameter expressed in fractions of inches. The hose size may also be designated by a dash number of sixteenth inch increments in the hose inside diameter. In the case of the SAE 100R5 hose@ the dash number represents the number of sixteenth inch increments in the outside diameter of tubing having approximately the same inside diameter as that of SAE 100R5 hose. See dimensional tables for the respective hoses. Hose Identification ?C The entire length of hoses shall be legibly marked@ parallel to the longitudinal axis@ with a stripe or stripes showing the respective SAE hose specification number (including type designation where applicable) and the fractional nominal hose inside diameter size repeated at intervals of not less than 18.0 in (460 mm). The hose dash size number designation may also be included at manufacturer's option. Additionally@ a colored yam shall be incorporated into the wall of the hose identifying the manufacturer. The color shall be as designated by the Rubber Manufactures Association. Fittings ?C Fittings for use with the SAE 100R1 through SAE 100R6 hydraulic hoses are covered in SAE j516 Tests ?C Unless otherwise agreed upon between the manufacturer and purchaser@ tests for evaluating conformance of product with specifications shall be on the basis of Qualification Tests may be conducted by the manufacturer@ the purchaser@ or both@ as decreed by the purchaser. The tests@ sampling@ and criteria applicable to both test classifications are given in the detailed specifications and tables for each hose. All tests shall be conducted in accordance with the procedures in SAE j343. Retests and Rejection ?C In the event of failure of one or more samples to meet any of the tests specified@ the material shall be resampled and retested. Twice the number of specimens designated under initial test procedure shall be selected from the lot in question for such retests@ and failure of any of the retested samples shall be cause for rejection.
