- What is BS IEC 61196 ‑ 1 ‑ 100 - General requirements for coaxial communication cables about? BS IEC 61196 is a series on coaxial communication cables. A coaxial communication cable is a type of electrical cable consisting of an inner conductor surrounded by a concentric conducting shield, with the two separated by a dielectric (insulating material); many coaxial cables also have a protective outer sheath or jacket. BS IEC 61196 ‑ 1 ‑ 100 gives the general requirements and conditions for electrical tests to be performed on coaxial communication cables and applies to IEC 61196-1-1xx (all parts), which specifies electrical test methods for coaxial communication cables.
